Back in 1989, the notion that cities might have a key role (or any role) in environmentally sound economic development was just beginning to be explored by urban theorists and environmentalists, and very few publications on the subject were available. Since that time, interest in "sustainable cities" and "green cities" has burgeoned; the fact that this bibliography contains some 400 items attests to the remarkable growth of interest in many different disciplines in the role of cities in sustainable development, and in how cities can be come more sustainable. And, as the "select" in the title suggests, although this bibliography is extensive, by no means does it encompass the entirety of the relevant literature, which continues to grow apace.en_US
